About Theo
Hello! I’m Theo, a 27 year old Science tutor from Bromley! After finishing with a first-class (honours) degree in BSc Biological Sciences from Durham University, and working for a year as a graduate teacher at Forest School, London, I began a career as a private tutor. I now have six years and over 1500+ hours experience teaching 1-to-1 both in-person and online.
I am a friendly and patient tutor, passionate about both science and the development of my students. I aim to help students become independent learners – not just teaching subject content, but mentoring in study and revision skills to build a student’s confidence in teaching themselves – but more on how I work below!
The majority of my tutoring work has been online, so I am well versed in how to get the best out of students over Zoom or Skype! In Biology/Chemistry/Physics I have taught all major exam boards, including iGCSE.
I have worked with students of a variety of SEN profiles, including autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, dyslogia and anxiety, and have experience homeschooling students, acting as their sole Science teacher from the start of year 10 to final exams. I hold an enhanced DBS check, and am subscribed to the annual update service.
Besides teaching, I am an actor and writer. Other interests include running, weightlifting, yoga and gaming.
Tutoring Style
Everyone learns and revises differently. My sessions are therefore tailored to student’s needs and dedicated to helping them become more independent in their learning. Besides filling gaps in knowledge and instilling confidence, I aim to help students explore revision techniques and find what works for them, so come the exams they are confident, and empowered to teach themselves.
I am friendly and patient. I like my sessions to be interactive; discussing topics, drawing diagrams, encouraging the student to lead and answer their own questions. I have worked with students of many ages and learning styles, and love the challenge of finding the right way of getting knowledge across to a new student.
When teaching subject content I utilise the subject specification, mark scheme and past papers, so the student understands not just what they need to know, but how to present it to score top marks.
I have a huge amount of experience teaching online, and so am adept at using programmes like Zoom, BitPaper and Google Docs to engage the student and provide an interactive and seamless lesson.
