About Stan
Known as "Doc F", I've been the Head of Chemistry, Leader of Learning and Housemaster (and Chemistry teacher) at a leading boarding school, and have been privileged to have been able to help many hundreds of pupils; they have ranged from those needing help to achieve A and A* grades for competitive courses, to those needing support for a subject they may find difficult, or at a time of their life that presents challenges. I make my students 3 promises:
1) that I will create a space that you feel safe in; if you're finding something hard then it's up to me to find a way that we can work together and that I can help you. I will never make you feel stupid, or lacking, because we haven't found a way yet to explain something
2) that we will cover the material that will help you get better marks and understand more about Chemistry, and to see the bigger picture
3) that you will feeling more capable, happier and having learnt something that will make Chemistry more enjoyable.
I am an examiner for OCR and Edexcel, and have been described as"kind", "helpful", "easy to understand" and "someone who makes it much easier". I run a Youtube channel with over 800K hits, and, as a published author, have electronic books available from iTunes, and I'm more than happy to share all the teaching resources I've made and used over the past 20 years with students (as PDFs or editable GoodNotes files).
I have been awarded Chartered Chemistry Teacher, Chartered Chemist and Chartered Scientist, and also run programmes for Chemistry Olympiad preparation and to bridge the gap between A-Levels and university. After my degree and PhD at the University of Durham, I've held research and/or lecturing positions at the University of St Andrews, the Max Planck Insitute for Chemical Ecology (Jena, Germany) and the University of Cambridge.
Tutoring Style
Lessons are bespoke and tailored; no two lessons are the same, and resources are unique to that lessons. Some recent examples:
- 1:1 online tutoring explaining Organic Synthesis and NMR to an A-Level student through a tutorial style lesson
- in person tutoring for a student about A-Level buffer calculations, providing take-away teaching reference resources and question packs
- tutoring a student in her first year at Cambridge University about organic chemistry, with online meetings
- in person lessons at a student's home who found school attendance difficult for her GCSEs
