About Myles
A culturally aware, qualified teacher, who is passionate about sharing knowledge. I studied English for over 12 years which culminated in a 2.1 in English Literature and Media and A's at GCSE and A Level. My teacher training was completed in a secondary school awarded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in South West London. This school is the 'second highest performing boys school in London'. I have also previously taught in a private English language school in Shanghai and at a public secondary school in Daegu. I have also been tutoring one to one consistently since my time in university and have taught over 3500 lessons.
I have hundreds of my materials gathered from my time teaching in the UK and international schools abroad. I have worked individually with over 190 students and have been tutoring since 2017. I am also from a background of low academic attainment, so I am completely aware of the transformative effect that education can have on a person's life.
Although, from the UK, working in unfamiliar surroundings has enabled me to become an independent, unnerved person who relishes the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures, enhanced by living in Germany, Japan, China and Korea. I am also a passionate sports fan and an ardent traveller, visiting 130 countries.
"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today".
Tutoring Style
I specialise in improving students' confidence and abilities in English by tailoring lessons to their needs and giving advice for exams and general improvements to their work. I have had great previous success in improving the grades of students who achieve highly in other subjects but struggle with the English GCSE. I take a pragmatic approach towards learning, specifically focusing on students' ability to formulate their ideas in order to maximise the amount of marks they can achieve, in relation to the national requirements/classroom assessments.
I provide assessment and activities devised from information relayed by the respective exam boards, specialising in AQA and EDEXCEL. I have an informal approach to lessons making them more enjoyable for students, whilst being focused on swift grade improvements. This combination has proved highly successful over the last seven years. I take great pleasure in helping students to help achieve their academic goals and shall do my utmost to help alleviate any exam stress.
Lessons tailored to students' needs, analysis of extracts, writing practice, lots of texts discussion and analysis, reviewing sample answers and mark schemes to aid and guide students.
For GCSE students - some of the services I offer include:
-Helping with exam preparations - strategies, reviewing past papers, other students' answers
-Specific exam techniques
-Detailed analysis of texts and themes
-Frequent assessment to demonstrate progress and areas for improvement.
-Numerous extra resources and revision guides that will not be provided by school (2GB of files) - from teaching in school and years of tuition.
-Feedback and updates on lesson performance within 24 hours of request.
-Feedback and marking of work within 24 hours of submission.
Each lesson contains intellectual discussions, modelling of responses, analysis and independent writing tasks which students will receive feedback on. The homework set builds upon this. All this is specifically informed by critieria which has relayed from the prospective exam boards.
