I have been tutoring science since 2009, and teaching for three years before that. I have a degree in Biology and continue to be fascinated and excited by science in general, most of my recent reading list made up of books about quantum biology, octopus cognition and the gut microbiome. 

I specialise in flexibility, encouraging the students to choose the subject they want to work on and the way they prefer to learn. I have a wide range of techniques to use and my first question in any session is 'what would you like to work on today?' If a student is struggling to think of anything specific, I then make some suggestions: 

If they want to improve their exam technique, we might work through a past paper, using the mark scheme to discuss how to make their answers more succinct, targeted or effective. 

There are several subjects in GCSE and A level that are a problem for most students, so if it's content they prefer to work on, I might suggest moles or bonding for chemistry, genetics or evolution for biology, or kinetic energy - gravitational potential energy transfers for physics. 

I encourage students to think of silly ways to remember things, and so my sessions are often informal in tone.
