About Latoya

My key strengths lie in my ability to offer students very clear explanations that help simplify and build understanding of even the most complex physics and maths topics. I also help students with exam strategy, identifying the silly errors they make and teaching them tweaks to their process to eliminate these which alone often leads to increases of 5%-10% in grades. I help students build their confidence and teach them how to break problems down to make them more accessible. I take great pride in helping students who feel they can't do physics or maths achieve good grades, as well as extending gifted and talented students with Oxbridge/Russell group aspirations.

I have taught as a classroom physics teacher for over ten years, been the head of physics, run a university entry physics foundation programme, been a school leader for teacher professional development focusing on teaching and learning strategies, and have a proven track record of students working with me achieving high grades. During my career I have also worked with students with various learning needs, disabilities, or mental health considerations such as ADHD, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyslexia, blindness, English as a second/additional language, anxiety, and depression. And am happy to say that these students thrived and built confidence in their abilities and themselves.

The pandemic showed me that it was possible to teach students online, and so in the past year I've made the switch to focus on helping individual students achieve their goals and dreams through online tutoring. Throughout my career to date, I've had the privilege to teach physics to students from all over the world who all follow different English syllabi, and so I have a vast range of experience with the various boards and curricula found in the UK, Australia and NZ.

In addition, as a University of Oxford graduate I also help students prepare for university entry tests such as the PAT (Oxford) and NSAA (Cambridge), as well as helping with personal statements and interview practice. For students taking a course that includes personal research projects, I also help guide them, teach them physics pertinent to their research to help them understand it better, and can offer editing services if needed. Please note that I do not condone plagiarism and will thus not write any assignments for students.

My qualifications are as follows:
- Over 10+ years experience tutoring and teaching physics to students from all over the world - any syllabus and all ages
- Published Educational Author
- MSc in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford (Distinction)
- PGCE in Physics with Mathematics
- MSc in Medical Physics
- BSc in Physics and Mathematics

Tutoring Style

All lessons are tailored to the individual student. We first will spend some time working out what your goals are, where we are currently at and then working out a realistic roadmap as to how to achieve your goals.

I teach using my IPad and laptop simultaneously, taking students through discussions of key ideas, past paper questions, animations, and at times games, puzzles, memes and dad-jokes. All lessons are taught with a good sense of humour. Lessons should not be boring, but varied, taking into account the energy levels of the student, their current attitude towards a topic or subject, and what other skills the student needs to develop such as practical, analytical, explanation, exam strategy, or critical thinking skills. Thus, I end up teaching the material in different ways that leads to students building confidence in their abilities, understanding, and exam techniques.

At the end of each lesson students will have a good set of notes that have been created during class. Where appropriate they also receive further questions for practice along with recommended actions they should take to reach their goals. I often spend additional time with parents and students at no extra charge to discuss a students' learning plan and progress trajectory. This can be at the end of each lesson for about 5 minutes to stay up to date, or via messages.

During the first session we will spend a little time discussing the students' learning needs and goals and start planning and outlining a learning plan, for the subsequent 30 minutes I will teach you a topic so you can experience my teaching style and make an informed decision as to whether I am the right tutor for you.

Hope to meet you soon!
