About Jennifer
I am an enthusiastic English teacher dedicated to nurturing students up to GCSE level. I take pride in building a strong rapport with my students, and considering their unique needs and interests.
My passion for English Language and Literature drives me to create engaging and personalised learning experiences which foster rapid and meaningful progress as well as personal growth. I love supporting my students both academically and pastorally, and instilling a love of English and of learning in general in those I teach, ensuring that every student I work with can flourish and succeed.
I have experience teaching AQA, Eduqas and the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, with examiner experience for both AQA and Eduqas.
I have been teaching for more than 13 years, many of which as Lead Practitioner for English and Whole School Literacy Coordinator. I have also gained an NPQML qualification. Through this, as well as through my private tuition experience, I have become highly skilled in supporting students to succeed, achieve and exceed their expectations, creating interesting, engaging, and highly effective sessions and resources, personalised to each students' needs and preferences.
Tutoring Style
I always start by having an open discussion with my student and any parents/carers what it is they are hoping to get out of tuition, whether that is to build confidence, work on a specific skill, aim for a pass grade at GCSE, or aim for the top grade at GCSE. I also complete a couple of quick baseline tasks, with no pressure, to assess what level my student is at, and create a clear action plan to support their progress. I take my students' interests into consideration, and try to incorporate these in my sessions to make them more engaging.
I focus on lots of discussion around language and literature to elicit ideas and creativity from my students. I also feel that for a student to know what they need to do, they need to see it in action, so once I have explained a particular idea/concept, I use lots of modelling, talking through my thought process, so it is crystal clear to the student how they need to approach a task. Whilst completing a task, I use prompt questions and scaffolding to support my student, slowly taking these away to build confidence and independence.
I am flexible and adaptable to my students' needs and preferences, always ensuring that they feel happy, comfortable and welll supported in our sessions.
