About Imogen
I’ve been tutoring and mentoring for over three years now. I love sharing my passion for English with my students, and watching them grow in confidence and skill over the course of our time together. Plus, I’m constantly learning from my students as they share new perspectives and ideas!
I studied Classics at University because I knew I loved literature and history, but couldn’t choose between them. I feel very lucky to have found a course that allowed me to combine all of my interests!
I've tutored GCSE and A-Level English Language and English Literature, covering most of the major exam boards, including AQA, OCR, and Edexcel. I do the hard work of untangling the exam and curriculum specifications, so my students can focus on learning the content and building their essay skills.
As a former Oxford student, I’m also able to help with admissions, from personal statements to the ELAT to mock interviews.
One of my former students is now studying Classics at Oxford. Another was able to progress from a C to an A* in her A-Level English Literature, and secured a place at a top Russel Group University. My recent GCSE pupils all achieved 6s, 7s, and 8s in their final exams.
In my spare time I love singing and cooking (although I'm not very good at either!).
Tutoring Style
I have a flexible approach to tutoring, which focuses on the needs of each student. No two students are the same, so I will find the methods and techniques most helpful for you. In our first session, we'll work together to figure out which areas of the subject need the most attention. From there, I'll build my lesson plans around you, using past questions and model answers to think about essay technique, or building your confidence with a text by breaking it down into manageable sections.
Some students want to focus on one specific area, while others may need support across the subject. I'm happy to take a micro or macro approach, alternating between different texts/topics if required, to ensure that every student covers everything they need help with.
I've worked in the past with students with special educational needs, and am comfortable tailoring my lesson plans to take account of any requirements you might have. I’m very aware that not everyone finds English fun or easy, but I strongly believe that we shouldn’t let ourselves feel intimidated by famous authors from the past. Instead, we can have fun figuring out what we can learn from them about the world we live in now. My main goal is that students come away from my sessions feeling confident, but also having found some fun in their studies!
