About Dominic
I'm Dom, I'm studying maths at the University of Manchester and my areas of interest (in my own studies) include pure mathematics and statistics. I have over 300 hours tutoring experience, and have tutored students from KS3 all the way up to A-Level. I have supported GCSE and A-Level students up to and through the exam period on multiple occasions and am always proud of and impressed by my students' ability and confidence come exam time. I really love maths, so it is honestly a pleasure to teach it.
Tutoring Style
I like to think that my enjoyment of teaching maths really shines through in my lessons. I would say my style is responsive and supportive, with a real focus on achieving great results. My friendly, light-hearted nature means students can enjoy their learning, and I can best facilitate progress for them, through careful, dedicated planning ahead of time.
I like to start my lessons with a warm-up exercise, this may be to reinforce some previous learning or to introduce a new topic for that day's session. Then if a student has any immediate concerns from their learning at school (or from a previous session), we will address those before moving on, as I strongly believe tutoring is much more of a 2-way street than in-class learning. Then I will move on, to the teaching part of the lesson, where I introduce a new topic and teach some of the theory behind it, this part varies in length from lesson to lesson, but generally I prefer to avoid lecturing students. I am much more keen on students learning maths by doing maths. We will work through a problem together and discuss how and why we each took certain steps on our way to an answer. I think that this parity between student and tutor, in this setting, creates an environment where the student can think freely and is not afraid to make mistakes, and ultimately, every mistake is an opportunity to learn. Then towards the end of lesson I will set some carefully selected questions for the student to work on, with pointers, help, and feedback where appropriate.
