I am a highly experienced Economics A level/GCSE teacher and former senior A level examiner, having been head of Economics for 27 years and also a Head of 6th Form for seven years. My examining experience includes being a senior examiner for A level Economics, GCSE Economics, GCSE Business and A and AS level Business Studies, as well as having been involved in setting GCSE papers for Economics and Business Studies. As a tutor I have many years of successful A level tutoring experience, both 1-2-1 and small groups.

I offer highly specialised tuition in preparing mainly A level Economics students for their exams, particularly in improving their standard of written work for essays and extended answer questions. This involves concentration on the 3 main exam skill areas of analysis, application and Evaluation (which students typically find difficult) and which is equally valid across all exam boards.  

My main skill is in identifying and drawing out a student’s maximum potential and am particularly experienced in helping students who are under-achieving in Economics and/or whose Economic grades are typically lower than in their other subjects. I am also more than willing to support an individual who simply wants to excel in this subject. These methods are equally valid for Business Studies A level too, though I am unable to offer subject support for Business, only exam writing skills.

Having been several years as a Head of Sixth form, I am also able to offer help in writing UCAS personal statements.

Tutoring sessions typically last 60 minutes and are conducted in a virtual classroom environment using shared pre-prepared notes or past exam questions. They are highly interactive, involving much ‘question and answer’ learning and frequent ‘concept-testing’ exercises. Students receive in advance a copy of the electronic notes and material.

I have developed successful techniques requiring frequent, but short, additional practice exercises, completed outside of the sessions. Within reason, no charge is made for this aspect of the service, being driven mainly by student motivation – the more motivation they show, the more work I do! These are submitted via shared documents (allowing real-time simultaneous editing and feedback). Students may also contact me between sessions, should they need immediate help or have questions about the feedback and again, no extra charge is made for this.
