Laura M.
BSc Environmental ScienceWhich university are you studying at?
University of Liverpool.
What subjects and qualifications did you take at school or college (e.g. A Levels, IB, BTECs, EPQ)?
A Levels: Geography, Chemistry, English Literature.
BTEC: Performing Arts.
Why did you decide to pursue this degree at university?
I’ve always had an interest in the environment and physical geography, but rather than a geography degree I wanted to do something that had a higher emphasis on Ecology, Earth system science, and Sustainability.
What does an average day or week at university look like for you (e.g. lectures, practicals, independent study, other interests)?
I had a few lectures and a few tutorials each week, and in my first year we had a lab day every week which was really fun. My degree was quite independent, but I would meet with my supervisor every week so I always had an opportunity to share any concerns.
What aspect of your course do you most enjoy?
I love how broad the course is, I’ve learnt about sustainability, ecology, carbon, earth systems, natural hazards, glaciers, and so much more! It was so interesting to learn about different topics and a great opportunity to figure out what I’m interested in.
What do you find most challenging about your degree?
I’m not a natural mathematician, and we had a few stats modules in my degree. I found these quite challenging as it’s something I hadn’t done before, but there were opportunities to book onto support tutorials, so I managed just fine!
What are your aspirations after your degree?
I would love to go into forest research, as I’m really interested in forest ecology.
What would be your top piece of advice for anyone wanting to study environmental science?
Be prepared for field work! I was in the Covid cohort, so I only went on two field trips, but across my whole degree there were 6 planned!! So invest in a good pair of waterproof trousers.
